Bear with me.... an engine uses valves to control the intake of fuel and expulsion of exhaust, if you rev it up, you won't damge the valves instantly, so you can do that. But if you leave the engine revved up high, or keep it revving high for a long time, keep in mind that the valves are opening and closing many times per second (try 50 times per second), therefore the valves will start wearing, and yes you will eventually mess it up. If you are asking if it will tear up engine then the answer is yes. As far as exploding not that I am aware of unless you feel a engine revving up so high on NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems) or methanol that it throws a piston/rod through the engine. I have been told too much ethanol will break the fuel pump and I know if you put diesel in a gas engine it will foul out and quit. Now a methanol engine on a dragster can blow up if it breaks down during races so that part is true. It all comes down to what type of engine and what type of fuel you are talking about.

Oil in the radiator will usually only come from either the engine, power steering or hydraulic oil cooler. More information needed here I think so just some guesswork follows. If a hot engine is left idling after a run,the temperature guage will rise due to heat rising from all the hot components and no ram air through the engine compartment,the electric fan will cut in and out(is this the "revving"you hear). If your engine is running hot when driving along,it is most likely the thermostat is stuck in closed position,this needs rapid attention or engine damage can result.Check coolant level when cold and if you have to drive it,keep the heater set hot to increase the amount of coolant in circulation.

It depends a lot on the engine. 1.7 suggests Honda, which means full synthetic is the best choice. But is an enormous number of 2.0 engines, very different from each other, so it's impossible to say. If it's nothing very advanced (such as a turbo, or a very high-revving unit), full synthetic will do (though it may be overkill). Oil is cheap. Don't skimp.
