There are a number of reazons why this light comes on: 1.- One of the most common reazons is incomplete combustion which can be caused by faulty spark plugs, they can be wore out or have ash or carbon deposits etc, etc, all these combined with a faulty catalitic converter will make the check engine light to come on, I had the same problem once and upon an engine diaqnostic it was found that my catalitic converter was not doing it's job any more so before I went and spend a lot of money replacing the catalitic converter I went and inspected the spark plugs and sure enough they needed replacement badly, replaced them and took my car to my local Autozone store and they reset or clear the eng light for free and it never came on again, so the moral of the story is: Check your spark plugs before you go and spend a lot of mony.
