To change the light bulb for the gear shift indicator in a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, first, disconnect the vehicle's battery for safety. Remove the gear shift bezel by gently prying it up with a flat tool or your hands. Once the bezel is off, locate the bulb socket for the gear shift indicator, twist it counterclockwise to remove it, and replace the old bulb with a new one. Reassemble the bezel and reconnect the battery to complete the process.
it is probably your shift lever bushings, but check the rubber seals and carpeting, sometimes they put pressure against the shifter making it pop out of gear.
