It is possible on a 2003 Avalanche for one side of the brake lights to work while the other side does not if there is a ground wire loose. Check the ground wire to make sure it is not loose or corroded.

this is replaced as a complete unit installed in the passenger side of the trunk, just pull the side trim out of the way. one 10mm socket and one 10mm wrench. remove the ground srtap bolt from the chassis and unplug the two connectors and pull assembly down out of the rubber.
The lower ball joints have to be pressed out. The upper ball joints are part of the control arm, so the complete upper assembly has to be replaced.
