After you try to start it and it doesn't start leave the key in the on position and you will see the security light is blinking. It will continue to blink for 10 minutes and then stay on solid for 30 seconds. Once it has stayed on for 30 seconds it will go off, this is when you can turn the key off and start it. Mine usually starts then but sometimes you have to go through the process again. Hope this helps!
answerTry this, if you take it to the dealer it will cost you $480.00 or more. I did this last night 8/4/06 and it worked. It's called ignition relearn security code. I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT. It started to act up during the initial start up about 2 weeks ago, then yesterday morning, got in the car and it failed to start. It tried, but it sounds like it was cut off of fuel and therefore no start. That's your security anti theft mode that kicked in. I have lot's to tell you, but read the instructions below and it will fix your problem. Take note: if this fails after a few attempts of this process, then the key tumbler ignition might be bad, not that your key is bad, but the security recognition is failing, therefore a dealer item will face you for this repair!
Step 1: Get in the car and put the key in the ignition. Try to start the vehicle (note:it will not start) Leave the key in the on position and get out of the car. (note: make sure you leave a door window down just in case it locks) Wait 10 minutes.
Step2: Get back in the car and try to start the car 4 or 5 times. (note: it will not start, this is a reset process) Now turn the car key to the off position and do not remove the car key!!! Get out of the car and wait 10 minutes.
Step 3: Get back in the car, note: you might see something different, your security light blinking on your radio, this is a good sign! now turn the key to start the car. It should start up. Turn off, take key out and put it back in and try to start the car again. It should start again, if it does, your successful!!!!
How to override the security system
To reset the security system on a 2001 Pontiac Bonneville, insert the ignition key and turn it to the "On" position (without starting the engine). Leave it in this position for about 10 minutes until the security light turns off. Afterward, turn the key to the "Off" position, wait a few seconds, and then attempt to start the vehicle. If the security system continues to malfunction, consider consulting the owner's manual or a professional mechanic.
