I have an 03 Impala LS with the 3.8 liter engine and it has made that sound for years. My mechanic says it is water running into the heater core in the dash. He says not to worry about it. SO far it has not caused me any problems.

Something is contacting in the engine, my guess is the fan. Have someone sit in your car and accelerate for you and look around to see if you can find anything hitting. If not, take it to someone.
