Abraham Lincoln was thought to have Marfan syndrome. This has not been proven however, and many researchers think he may have had a different disorder instead.
Not as a federal holiday. Many states observe(d) Lincoln's birthday as a state holiday. Many people remember having both Lincoln's birthday and Washington's birthday off from school as kids, but one was a state holiday and the latter a federal holiday. After the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed in 1968 (took effect in 1971), many people became confused and thought that the federal law had been changed to merge the two as "Presidents Day". The following article about Washington's birthday discusses Lincoln's birthday and the confusion.
Many U.S northern citizens were against slavery and thought since the North was all free states, that a slave in the north was automatically free. This was not the case. The bounty hunters would arrest the slave and even free African Americans. Despite the controversy, even Abraham Lincoln believed the law was wrong but agreed to enforce it.
Abraham Lincoln had gradually become convinced that slavery was morally and ethically wrong, and that it had to end. Southerners were certain that as president, Lincoln would take steps to end slavery and free the slaves. Plantation owners, who relied on slave labor, were especially opposed to what Lincoln wanted to do, but even most ordinary southerners agreed that their states should have the right to own slaves.
Many people in the north wanted no part of slavery anywhere in the country. Southerners wanted slavery because they thought it helped production of crops etc. There are contrasting beliefs. Abraham Lincoln was from the North and a proponent of Federal rights and powers to limit slavery. The southern states wanted strong state powers and rights and weaker federal powers and rights. Slavery was a States Right issue and the federal government should not interfere. The northern states wanted the exact opposite, strong federal powers and rights and weaker state powers and rights. The right of the Federal government to abolish Slavery should trump any so-called States Rights. So the southern states voted to secede from or leave the United States also know as the Union. The US Civil War was thus started.
Abraham Lincoln did not intentionally sacrifice himself. He did what he thought was right for the country.
And I thought Abraham Lincoln was on the Penny.
because southerners thought Abraham Lincoln was going to remove slavery
Abraham Lincoln, himself, did not like slavery. He thought it to be immoral. However, Lincoln believed that if it would better the nation, it is the right thing to do.

Abraham Lincoln thought that slavery was pulling the country apart.
No, Abraham Lincoln only had one wife-- Mary Todd Lincoln. But Sarah Bush Johnston was Abraham Lincoln's step-mother. Sarah's first husband died in 1816, and she married a widower named Thomas Lincoln (Abraham's father) in December 1819. By all accounts, she and Abraham got along well, and he thought of her as if she were his biological mother.
