A person become president, he needs to meet these requirements. First, you must be a citizen born in the United States. Next, you must have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years. Then, you must be at least 35 years old. Finally, a president can serve only two terms, or periods in office. Each term is 4 years.

The House Speaker is third in line for president, just behind the vice-president. If some catastrophic event wiped out the both President and Vice-President in a very short period of time, the Speaker would be sworn in as President. Of course the Speaker of House could later be elected President as was James K. Polk.

The Speaker of the House would become president if both the president and vice president could no longer serve as president (e.g., death, resigned, removed due to being impeached, etc.). This has never happened.
