He didn't gain a international reputation at 22. At 22 he was a junior British officer in the French and Indian war and he just about started the war. He was ordered to take the French ambassador to a location and on the way one of his Native American scouts killed him. Since Washington was in charge it was his fault and he was given a paper to sign confessing to the murder. In the 1700's all educated gentlemen knew how to speak and read French, but Washington didn't know French. He didn't want to admit this so he signed all the papers written in French admitting he was responsible for the death of the ambassador.
