Both Henry Clay, the famous Speaker of the House of Representatives and Abraham Lincoln were both members of the Whig Party. Both were born in Kentucky and clearly Clay was a mentor of Clay's. Both men were against slavery even though Clay owned slaves.Here it must remembered that the world of the mid- 19th century of the US was not the modern world of today. Clay was not "evil" because he owned slaves. And he and Lincoln were both members of the American Colonization Society that had the plan to send freed slaves to either Africa or a place in Central America. Neither man even imagined that a war would be necessary to end slavery.
But, once again, in their day, there was no "easy" way to change society. The slave population had grown to over three million and later to 4 million.
From a social view to an economic view, both men could find no solution to the problem. It had grown far beyond the normal means to solve it.
Lincoln, by the way, gave the eulogy at Clay's funeral. This showed his respect for Clay despite the fact that he was a slave owner.
What Clay did for the younger Lincoln was to influence him to be a Unionist, to accept compromise and to respect the laws of the US. Lincoln was a man of character, even more so under the mentorship of Henry Clay.
