Congressman Henry Clay had been a mentor of Abraham Lincoln when Lincoln served in the House of Representatives and even later on. Both men had been Whigs. Clay was from Kentucky.Clay died well before the US Civil War, and his career was outstanding.
Clay owned slaves, and he and Lincoln often spoke about how difficult it would be to end slavery.
Lincoln was so close to Clay that he delivered the eulogy at Clay funeral. There is much more to say about Clay. Space prohibits it. One thing should be mentioned however, Clay was a slave owner, yet he was not a cruel man. Lincoln knew this and that's one reason they remained good friends until Clay's death.
