President Andrew Johnson's attitude toward African Americans significantly influenced his approach to Reconstruction by promoting leniency towards the Southern states and opposing civil rights for freed slaves. He believed in a swift restoration of the Union without strong protections for African Americans, which led to the implementation of Black Codes that restricted their rights. Johnson's unwillingness to support measures that would empower African Americans ultimately hindered the progress of Reconstruction and exacerbated racial tensions in the South. His presidency is often criticized for failing to address the needs and rights of newly freed African Americans.

To put it bluntly Jackson felt that the only good Indian was a dead one. He built his reputation on killing native Americans and there were many who agreed with him. The US policy towards the Native Americans was one of discrimination and it was apartheid at it's very worse. The Indian Removable Act moved native people off of ancestral lands so settlers could take the land or the railroad go through. Moving people to reservations meant that they were unable hunt, and unable to live within reasonable means. It was death and Jackson was intolerant in his attitude to Native Americans.

A sorry attitude will only add more weight to the baggage you already carry. Dump what you can, smile, and be grateful for what you have. Attitude makes a difference.

Many African Americans moved north to escape residual prejudice in the south, but found a similar attitude albeit with more restraint. The North wanted them free, but by and large, did not want them as neighbors. African Americans toiled and fought for anther 100 years before they were granted equal rights as American citizens.
The former states of the Confederacy had a huge negative view of the US's Reconstruction plans for the South. They believed that the US was getting "even" with them for the cause of the US Civil War.Wherever possible, Southerners evaded laws and regulations of the Reconstruction Era.
