The Southerners felt justified in separating from the Union because they felt their rights were being violated. They felt that they had the right to leave the Union because the Federal government was becoming more powerful. If you want to get a good feel for the differences of both sides I suggest watching the movie Gettysburg. While not completely factual it is a rather good depiction of not only that battle, but causes for the entire war.
