Jefferson (and Washington) were an early abolitionists in Virginia. Jefferson was unable to free his slaves in such a way as to protect their marriages and families. He and Washington retained their ownership for that sole purpose. Washington was able to free his slaves in a protected manner (in his will), but by the time that Jefferson died, the slave-holding laws had been reinforced to prevent even such freedom.

Slavery in those days was not looked on with the same distaste it is viewed with in the present day. So to include such things was not out of the ordinary. Thankfully times have changed, and such things would not happen today.
