The usual answer is 44. At least if you count Presidents by every CHANGE in the person serving (as is usually done). By this method of counting, Grover Cleveland is treated as both 22nd & 24th, since his two terms were interrupted by a term under Benjamin Harrison.

But if you are asking about the number of different people to serve in the office, the number is currently (in mid-2010) is 43.
