The United States had originally offered $30 million for the Mexican Cession. But Mexico refused. That angered the Americans. When the American army crossed the Nueces River, the Mexican army shot at the American army. That started the Mexican War. After the Mexican War, they signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty said that the Mexico had to cede the Mexican Cession and the United States had to give Mexico $15 million.
The "Mexican Cession" was the vast area of land constituting most of the present Southwest United States, from California eastward to New Mexico. The lands were ceded to the US in 1848 under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The cession amounted to more than 1/3 of the total area of pre-war Mexico, including all or part of the current US states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. The US settlement to Mexico totalled $18.5 million. Five years later, the US purchased a much smaller disputed border area for $10 million in the Gadsden Purchase.
The Texas cession, which included present day California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and New Mexico.
Texas. It was a separate country (after defeating Mexico and winning independence) for ten years before joining the US because it was broke and could sell off pieces of the country (now a state) to the US to pay off its debts. It joined in 1845, four years before California.
The United States received the states of California, Utah, and Nevada, as well as portions of New Mexico, Wyoming, Arizona, and Colorado as a result of the Mexican Cession. The Gadsen Purchase gave the southern portion of Arizon to the US.
alot of people would argue and say that it was the Louisiana Purchase, but it was actually the Mexican Cession. Addition: This is the problem when people randomly answer questions. The Mexican Cession was just over half a million square millions. The Louisiana Purchase was over 800,000 square miles. Maybe the original person who wrote this was thinking square km since the Mexican Cession is larger if one places it in KM and the Louisiana Purchase in square miles. However, if you convert one, you have to convert the other and that means the latter would still be larger.
The Mexican-American War, and the resulting Mexican Cession, were during the presidency of James K. Polk.
It gave us the Mexican Cession.
