This is a system called the Manor System. The lord of the manor would hire knights. To attracted workers the lord would say that his soldiers would protect the serfs who lived on the farm. In return the serfs would have to farm on the land. So the knights made the manor militarily self sufficient and the serfs' farming made them economically selfsufficient

No one in the South gained influence during the Civil War; the Union victory left the South shattered economically, politically, and socially. However post-war, two groups known as the 'Carpetbaggers' and the 'Scalliwags" became very influential.
Manuel L. Quezon's Philosophy of Education was Filipino oriented. He wanted colonial people to improve themselves intellectually, morally, and economically.
It was different in that the absolute power of the King had been replaced by the rule of Law as executed by mostly elected officials, controlled ( in theory, at least) by the French Parliament. If the countries of the Islamic World had retained ideological support for scientific and technological progress, such as they had had during the Islamic Golden Age, they could have remained militarily and economically competitive with Europe. This would have allowed them to prevent Europeans from colonizing them.
