No one in the South gained influence during the Civil War; the Union victory left the South shattered economically, politically, and socially. However post-war, two groups known as the 'Carpetbaggers' and the 'Scalliwags" became very influential.

The United States received the states of California, Utah, and Nevada, as well as portions of New Mexico, Wyoming, Arizona, and Colorado as a result of the Mexican Cession. The Gadsen Purchase gave the southern portion of Arizon to the US.
It changed quite a bit. We went from the weak Articles of Confederation to a more definiatve Constitution using a Republican Democracy. During the federalist period, our nation gained greater strength than state and local governments and important precedents were set as in Marbury v. Madison where the principle of judicial review was established. It defined the role of the Supreme Court as well as made the Judicial branch equal to the Legislative and Executive branches. Our Nation was filled with sectional strife as different regions developed different independent economies. By the 1850's there was much debate over the expansion of slavery in western territories gained by war or treaties. The Election of 1860 was the last straw for South Carolina and the lower southern states as Lincoln and the Republican party won without ANY southern electoral votes.

The Amnesty Act of 1872 restored voting rights and political eligibility to most former Confederates in the South. This led to the reintegration of former Confederates into Southern politics and allowed them to regain political influence. As a result, Democrats, who largely represented white Southerners, gained power in the region, leading to the end of Reconstruction and the establishment of white supremacy in Southern politics.

The population growth in the South had a significant effect on politics. It increased the number of representatives in Congress from that region, strengthening their political influence. Additionally, the increased population provided a larger voter base, giving Southern politicians more sway in national elections. Furthermore, the growth also deepened the divide between the North and South, particularly on issues related to slavery and states' rights.
