Answer

Kanasas-Nebraska act, the book Uncle Tom's Cabin, New states and wether they would be slave states or not.

What were the reasons for the Civil War starting? They fought because they didn't agree with what the country was doing. The people fought on both sides of the war. Fathers against sons and vice-versa. Some people thought that the lessening of a slave's life was okay and others disagreed with that. They also fought because of the state's rights and succession as well. At the time, Missouri was attempting to attain statehood and wanted to be viewed as a free state.

The Civil War began because of conflict between the Northern and Southern parts of the United States. The North had abolished slavery while the South still wanted it because it was their source of income. Slavery was a big cause of the Civil War. Another cause was the election of President Lincoln into office. He was considered a traitor to the Republicans of the South because Lincoln went against all their beliefs yet he was a Republican. Since the South had a grudge against Lincoln, they got out of the Union and formed a Confederacy. Lincoln didn't like this, he believed all states in the United States were "married" to one another and were not allowed to break away. Thence, the Civil War started.

The Southern states, under severe economic and political pressure from the more industrialized Northern states, banded together and attempted to exercise their 9th and 10th Amendment rights under the US Constitution, and secede from the Union. The President and the Congress fomented war by attempting to militarily re-supply Fort Sumter, located in the middle of Charleston, SC harbor (then and still, one of the South's principal seaports for imports and exports). The South was forced to resist the attempted military blockade of one of its principal harbors, thus beginning the military actions.

It is commonly thought that 'slavery' was the principal reason for the war, but until the Emancipation Proclamation was signed several years into the war it was only one of several issues. In fact, it was quite common for slaves to be held, owned, and worked, in the North, both before and during the war.

Remember: It's only the winning side that gets to write the history!
