George Washington (1832-1899) is known in the US as the "Father of Our Country".
Washington led the Continental Army as a general in the American Revolution. Afterward he served as president of the Constitutional Convention that established the new system of federal government. Finally, he was elected the first President of the United States. As President, he oversaw the building of the new national capital that today bears his name, Washington, DC.

He spent most of his life living in wooden frame houses that were nice for his day but substandard by today's measures. Fortunately he had slaves to empty the chamber pots, ccok and serve the food , bring in the fire wood and carry out the ashes from the fire places.
