To a small extent, mass media, and to a much larger extent, freedom protections for the freedom of the press and freedom of speech were meant to protect against the growing power of the president. It was also meant to protect against the growing power of the federal government in general.

The media does not directly limit the power of the President. However, by reporting what he does, they keep him thinking always about the political effects of his actions. Sometimes, they raise an issue which provokes Congress to pass new laws that may restrict the President's powers. At present some topics are the power of the president to use drones to kill foreign operatives and the power to secretly tap lines of communcation is being questioned.
