As with most schools for Native Americans in the 19th and early 20th Century, the purpose was to try and make the Indian as "American" as possible.Children were taken from their tribes and homes and parents and mixed in with other Indians. Schools forbad any language other than English be used. Hair was cut in the normal "American" styles and both girls and boys had to wear "white clothing" and no "Indian dress." Basic subjects were taught but nothing reflecting the heritage of the Indians attending.

Brown v. Board of education
The New England Primer was removed from public schools in the middle of the 20th century.
The fort was built in 1812 to establish a position at the river junction and to promote the fur trade. Another purpose was to keep Indian lands free of settlers. In 1820 the first school in Northwest territory was set up. In 1830 Dred Scott was purchased by John Emerson whose legal case will eventually go to the Supreme Court. As the area became more populated the army sold the fort for 90,000 in 1858.
