Thomas Jefferson believed that the United States should not have a strong central goverment; he thought the real power should lie with the state governments, and he spent much of his presidency alterring the country to fit these criteria. Also, he believed that the country should be based off its average citizen: the farmer and the person who worked hard to provide for himself and his own living. He wanted to avoid the urban city messes that were too common in Europe, as well as to avoid the poverty and inequality. An agrarian republic is one based off the promotion of agriculture, which is what Jefferson wanted the United States to be.
