Memphis was founded approximately 3000 B.C.E. as the first capital of Egypt when Upper and Lower Egypt were united into a single country.

It has been known by sever different names, including its original name, Inbu-Hedj, Djed-Sut, Ankh-Tawy, Hut-ka-Ptah, Moph or Noph (in The Bible) and Men-Nefer. Men-Nefer became Menfe in Coptic and the Greek adaptation of Menfe was Memphis.

The site of Memphis is now uninhabited.
