After the defeat between 1948 and 1950 of China's ruling Kuomintang Party and its leader Chiang Kai-Shek, the Party's leadership and its remaining army fled to the island of Formosa and there established the new seat of the "Republic of China" which included mainland China, where the Communists were still seen by the Kuomintang leadership as usurpers and rebels. After worldwide recognition of mainland Communist China the island's leadership transformed the island to the independent State of Taiwan. Beijing however still sees it as part of all China and takes the position that the island therefore can never become independent from them.
