Look at the Preamble (if yuou are talking about the U.S. American). To create a more efficient and appropriate type of government (the Articles did not work very well). Create a system that will be fair to all. To protect the common person and their family and their rights and their dignities and their pursuit of happiness. Encourage humanity, innovation, etc. Make it so that we are free and all of our descendants.
