In the feudal system...They feared their lord (probably a knight or other noble), bandits (which their lord protected them from), dangers to their crops, diseases and many other supposed dangers (witches and other supernatural forces).
Serf's, being indentured servants (slaves through owing their master), would most fear their master, for they had the ability to starve, beat, or cut them off. Next they would fear the unknown, much like people do still today. The Unknown being a hostile takeover. The Serf's biggest fear's came from the fact that they had no rights or freedoms. They were indebted, which means they had no control of their lives and that of their famlies.
The czar that freed the serfs in Russia is Alexander the II.
The serfs worked for the owner of the land they farmed and lived on. This could be a member of the nobility, a lesser member of the gentry, the king himself, or even some Church organization. Serfs were organized by a person called a reeve, who was himself a serf, appointed by the lord or elected by the body of the serfs on a manor.
They were called serfs. Since they were not slaves, it is not precise to say they were owned by the lord.
* Well, yes, serfs were the same as villiens. They did the same jobs. Working for the land and working for their lord. But, they didnt have to do all the hard work like villiens did. So therefore, i changed my anwser. Villiens were not serfs.. at least i dont think so.......??????

A knights most important job was to protect the serfs of the village.
Most commonly, serfs were farmers, but there were many other things they did. They could be miners, foresters, or porters. They provided most of the labor to build roads and castles. In some cases, they worked on boats or drove wagons. There were special jobs they could do, if they were very good. The reeve, who was a supervisor for the serfs on a manor, was usually a serfs who had either been appointed by the lord or elected by the serfs.
