"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,

and to the republic for which it stands,

one nation..."

The republic "for which it stands" is the United States. Make sense now?

A republic is a government in which the voters are sovereign, holding all the political power via the ballot, while elected representatives are responsible to the people and exercise the political power on a daily basis. The writers of the Constitution did not use the word "democracy" to describe the form of government created by that document. They wrote instead, " a republican form of government," which means a representative democracy or republic.
