In 1968 Alexander Dubcek became head of the Czechoslovakian government and began a number of reform policies that gave more rights to the citizens than had been allowed up to that point by the Soviets. This became known as the "Prague Spring". Eventually the Soviet Union, thinking that it would lose its control of Czechoslovakia and the other Warsaw Pact countries, invaded the country and ended the reform movement by force.
