After the conclusion of the American Revolution, about a fifth of the Loyalist population in the newly-formed United States fled to other parts of the British Empire.

A majority of southern Loyalists moved to the Florida Territory, which remained loyal to the British Crown throughout the war, and the northern Loyalists fled to Canada.

The rest immersed themselves into the newborn nation and embraced the new government structure. It is notable that a number of Loyalists that remained in the United States were harrassed.
