During the war of independence, or the Revolutionary War, the Americans faced cold weather, lack of proper food, and a lack of organization within the army itself. The American army was nearly all volunteers who came to fight with nothing but a rifle and the clothes on their backs.

Solders huddled together to keep warm and had little food, also Washington reported 1 third of solders were unfit for war because they lacked clothes and shoes. Also civilians suffered to because of the British navy blockade to isolate Americans from outside contact; this disrupted trade and people were profiteering .
