A Missouri Supreme Court Justice initially serves for one year. After they have served at least one year, they are placed on the General Election Ballot and the Missouri voters vote to keep him/her on the Supreme Court. If they are kept on, they are seated on the Supreme Court for twelve years.

The Supreme Court of Missouri comprises seven justices, each of whom gets a two-year rotation as Chief Justice, decided in order of seniority. The current Chief Justice is William Ray Price, whose term began July 1, 2009.

Selection for office is made via the "Missouri Plan," in which the Appellate Judicial Committee provides the Governor with the names of three approved candidates from which to select his or her nominee. If the Governor fails to nominate a candidate, the Committee, itself, makes the appointment.

After a year's service, the new justice runs unopposed on a general election ballot. If the voters approve his or her confirmation, the justice then serves a 12-year term.
