Since the war took place in America, the American soilders had an advantage since they know their surrondings. They would hide behind bushes and shot people in coverage so the British soilder wouldn't know where they are shooting from. They would fight in the woods so they could hide and surprise the soilders with an attack. If they fought man to man they would have lost since Brtian had one of the best army. Tactics: Guerilla warfare. The British fought European style; marching towards their enemy in nice close ranks...parade style; wearing bright red uniforms with white crossed straps across their chests. The Americans (we weren't the US back then), wearing civilian clothing, or blue Continental Army uniforms, or animal skins (deer skin-buck skins), and often firing longer rifles (with rifling inside the bores/grooves), hid behind trees and rocks, and when the British were within rifle range; preferably 100 yards or less, the Americans opened fire. In the beginning, some American units did fight in the open according to European customs, but it was not popular with the American units. The British called our method (guerilla warfare) of fighting "un-civilized", "un-gentleman like", "un-soldierly", "cowardly", and "fighting like savages."
The Revolutionary War was fought guerrilla style by the United States and traditional rank-and-file by the British. The British army marched in lockstep, in the open, and dressed in bright colors. The only thing that could have been worse is if they'd been doing something completely stupid like banging drums. Oh wait a minute ... THEY WERE ALSO BANGING DRUMS. This was considered the "proper" form of warfare. The Americans hid behind trees and wore no uniforms for the most part. They took British forces by surprise in many cases and basically picked off the British as the British continued to be gentlemanly about the whole thing.
