Each branch has the ability to be a check on the actions of other branches, this is commonly called a system of checks and balances.
It guarantees that each branch of the government have equal amount of power and the ability to object to the passing of bills into laws by other branches.
"Executive privilege" is a term used by the United States government. In layman's terms, it refers to the ability of the President to overrule interventions from the other two branches of government.
The Supreme Court may not amend the Constitution, but their interpretations definitely serve as checks and balances on the other two branches. Laws have to agree with the Constitution to be legal.
