Washington left a few men behind to keep feeding the campfires so they would continue to burn brightly. Washington's army departed in the middle of the night. His men wrapped the wheels of the gun carriages of the cannon with rags to muffle the sounds they made going across the frozen ground. Washington's army stayed away from the main road and took a secondary road around the British to Princeton.
He did several things. In one instance he made the British think he had a larger force than he really had. He lit campfires along a ridge to make it look like the troops were in camp. Then, he quickly and quietly moved his men out of the area. To the British surprise the next morning no one was there to fight them. He had a spy network that was never discovered by the British and the spies used many means to relay information. One way was women would hang laundry in a particular order so a message was conveyed. In another encounter with the British his troops were having problems moving through heavy mud, but as a planter he realized the weather would change that night and freeze the ground. That is exactly what happened and Washington's troops were no longer bogged down in mud. They were able to escape the British.
He set up camp and kept fires going while the troops marched to princeton.. the british still thought they were at their camp ground (suprise attack)
