Hit and miss. In cities there were doctors, but in the wilderness there might not be one for several miles. Barbers did medical and dental procedures (this is why there is a red/white barbershop pole. They would dry the bloody rags on a pole next to their shop.). Midwives were also important in the colonies and often neighbor women would come to help if one wasn't around. If a person got a serious wound that part of the body usually was taken off and if it was in a place like the chest, groin, or head they died. The understanding about germs, infections, and disease was not known about in medicine in the 1700-1800's.
