Richard Nixon is responsible for calling a cease-fire to end US bombing of North Vietnam. Shortly thereafter, all of the other actors in the war agreed to the cease-fire.

The Battle of Yorktown was fought because Lord Cornwallis believed that by having the British troops camp out in Yorktown Virginia they could force American troops to surrender control of the Carolina territories. George Washington marched the American troops into Yorktown and demanded that the British troops leave. This was the final battle of the American Revolution.
Nixon used his strategy of Vietnamization. It called for gradually withdrawing US forces and turning the Ground fighting over to the South Vietnamese. However, Nixon also begun secret bombing raids of Cambodia, a country which borders Vietnam. This was meant to stop North Vietnamese troops and supplies from moving along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Vietnam shifted the burden of the ground fighting from American troops to South Vietnamese troops during the later stages of the war. This was called "Vietnamization".
Ultimately the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam could be used to define the end of the war, the last of the American troops did not leave until the Paris Peace accords were signed in 1973.
