Also called the "XYZ"-affair, it was a diplomatic crisis between the USA and France in 1797/98 caused by French foreign minister Talleyrand who only wanted to start talks on averting possible war between the two countries after recieving a substantial amount from the US in bribes and loans. 'XYZ' stood for the names of the three French diplomats that Talleyrand used as informal middlemen for the hoped-for transaction.
The US delegation refused to cough up, which lead to a stalemate in negotiations. Only after Talleyrand had been called to task on the affair by the French Government, talks were succesfully resumed.
