Augustus Swift was a meat mogul. He invented a practical ice-cooled railroad car to transport meat from Chicago to other cities. He used meat by-products for glue and other products. He was also devoted to the arts of Chicago and donated money to Northwestern University and YMCA. He lived from 1839 to 1903.
