The first reason was political:to colonise. There is need to point out that colonisation was used as a coloration for greed. The main motive for colonisation was greed.

The second reason was economy.Lack of manpower and physical strength especially, to work in farms. The Europeans were and still are weak. They could not do hard job like the naturally hard built Africans. This gives reason for the slave trade ,which was the buying away of able bodied Africans to work in their farms and later mechanisation of agriculture.Even then, there were no ready-buyers of the machines in the European markets, so they had to move, exploring where demand was high or higher. This ofcourse was Africa

The third was commerce .There was no ready-made market for European goods to be sold. So they went out with thier products to Africa where there was a free , available and lucrative market. This is gave birth to the infamous SCRAMBLE FOR AFRCA and subsequently the partitioning of africa.
