In September, the committee recommended censuring Senator McCarthy and on November 8, 1954, that is what Congress did. Although he still was a member of the Senate, he no longer had any powers and he was ignored by the Senate. He started drinking and died of acute hepatitis on May 2, 1957. Sitting on the McCarthy panel were notables like Richard Nixon and Robert Kennedy.
