The 15th Amendment, which states that nobody shall be denied the right to vote because of their race, was ratified on February 3, 1870.

However, until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, many blacks -- especially in the southern states -- were prevented from voting by a variety of unlawful tactics. Sometimes, they were told that they could not vote unless they passed a literacy test, or could recite the names of every single U.S. Senator, none of which is true. Other times, they were simply harassed or bullied into not voting.
