Texas vs Johnson
The American flag is commonly referred to as the "Stars and Stripes" or the "Old Glory."
The Supreme Cour recognized tha burning the American flag is an exrecise of our freedom of speech. In the case of the State of Texas vs Johnson. They said that he could not be arrested for it because under the 1st amendment of the constituiton it was considered symbolic speech and therefore protected.
Texas wasn't annexed, it joined the USA by treaty, which is why the state flag flies at the same height as the U.S. flag when on side-by-side flagpoles. Tyler and everyone else was afraid that the treaty would mean a war with Mexico, which in fact DID occur within months. Texas wasn't the only issue between the USA and Mexico, as there were problems with Southern California too, but Texas was the biggest and final straw on the camel's back. The Mexican-American war began when Mexican artillery opened up on Fort Texas, in Brownsville, from across the Rio Grande, in Matamoros, starting a six-day siege and war with the USA. Tyler was right.
According to the US Flag Code, the US Flag should be larger in size and (if flying on the same pole), at the top of the pole. If flying the American flag with a state flag, the American flag needs to be on a taller pole than the state flag and displayed on the flag's right side. If flying them on poles of equal size, then flying the American flag on the flag's right side is correct.

The star that represents Texas is located in the far right vertical column. It is the star that is 2nd from the top. If you draw a rectangle shape with that particular star being on the left side of the rectangle, you will find that the Texas flag will appear within that rectangle. The Texas flag is always flying when a U.S. flag is flying. The Texas flag just happens to blend in to the U.S. flag until you place a rectangle around it. The Texas flag is the only state flag that is allowed to fly within the U.S. Flag.
In my Karate school the American flag goes on our right shoulder.

The meaning of the Goliad Flag has nothing to do with slavery, or "African" American history. It was a flag raised over the fortress of Goliad in Texas during the Texas Revolution against Mexico. It's meaning to Texans are varied, but fall under "I would rather cut off my right arm, than live under tyranny."
Any state flag should be flown below or level with the US Flag, but never above it. If it is on the same level it should be on the right, this includes Texas. The rumor that Texas is the only state that is allowed to fly at level with the US Flag is just that a rumor and an urban myth.
TEXAS Flag is the only United States (State Flag) that is allowed to fly at equal height as the United States Flag. All other State flags must according to Federal Law fly below the top height of the U.S flag.
