The Sevnteenth Amendment
Party whips is the name give to the representatives of parties in the house. The assistant leader of the party with the most number of members is called the deputy majority chief whip.
No one can force any legislator to be present, however both the House and Senate have Majority and Minority Leaders who will bully or cajole members of their parties to be present for votes that are critical to their parties. In the House, each party also has a 'Whip' who assists the party leader.
On October 10, 2007: Senate majority floor leader is a Democrat; Senate minority floor leader is a Republican. This may or may not change in the near future. The answer depends on which party held the most seats after the last election; if any senators died in office and were replaced by their home state Governor - who may or may not be from the dead senator's political party; if a senator happens to switch political parties after election (which has hapened).

There are no minor leaders in the senate because to be in the senate you have to be at least 30 years of age.
The Sevnteenth Amendment
The Ludlow Amendment failed to be passed by the House of Representatives or the Senate thus it was never sent to the states for ratification as an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Americans showed a 75% approval rating of the amendment in 1935 but support continued to decline until September 1939 (following Germany's invasion of Poland) when support was only 51%.

Democrat and Republican parties are the major parties in both Houses. Currently, the Republican Party holds a majority in the House, and the Democrats hold a majority in the Senate.

El Salvador has many political parties; however the two most popular ones --ARENA and the FMLN-, ideologically resemble the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively.
House leaders have more organizational control over the actions of representatives than Senate leaders do.
