On July 8th, 1776 in Independence Square, Colonel John Nixon read one such copy allowed to the public, so empowering those who heard it that they stormed the Pennsylvania State house, ripped down the king's coat of arms, and burned it. It wasn't until early August, 1776, after the final copy had been written, that it was actually signed by the delegates.
