It was recovered - Guiteau was grabbed by a police officer. It was apparently photographed by the Smithsonian, but it has (apparently) been lost. However, James Garfield (son of the president) did donate the floor tiles that the wounded president fell onto. The Smithsonian has that, as well as a pretty representational drawing of the shooting. The Army Medical Museum has two photographs of Guiteau's skull.
