In a way, neither. The federalist party shared a fair amount of the "common good's" ordeals shared by the modern Democratic party. However, after the elections in the early 1800s and after President Adams' term, the Federalist party began to fade away, leaving only past members there, which was very few. To simplify: more modern democratic than modern republican in serving ALL people.
William Henry Harrison ran in the Whig party while Dwight Eisenhower ran in the Republican party. Both men were soldiers in their early life as well as Christians.

Thomas Jefferson is generally credited as being the founder of the Democratic-Republican Party (from a group originally called the Anti-Federalists). He was joined by former Federalist Party member James Madison, who adopted Jefferson's views of government.
