A candidate for vice president of the U.S. does not run separately. The VP candidate is selected as a running mate by the candidate for president, and they run as a team. Back in the beginning, they did run separately: the person with the most votes was president, and the one with the second most was vice president. That system didn't last very long; rivals who'd fought for election didn't usually team up too well. (But it could happen within a party!) A VP can run for president later if the person's party selects him or her as the candidate or if the person decides to run independently.

presidential primary elections and caucuses is one of the first steps in the process of electing the President of the United States of America. The primary elections are run by state and local governments, while caucuses are private events run by the political parties
In certain nations and cities in the US and abroad run off elections are sometimes held. This often happens because according to the rules of any particular election, a candidate may have to win a certain percentage of the votes to win the election straight out. In such cases the normally top two vote getters are set up for a run off election to determine the final winner.

run elections
When elections are free, that means that there is an actual choice; anyone can run for office and anyone can vote for the candidate whom they actually prefer. Many countries have had fake elections to create an illusion of democracy. In a fake election, some candidates are not allowed to run and may even be arrested if they try to run, or in some cases, only one political party is allowed (communist nations have always used that system - they have elections, but there is only one candidate on the ballot) or people are coerced to vote in the way that the government requires.
A special election, or a run-off would be the term for such an election. However, a majority is not required in congressional elections. The candidate with the most votes wins. (You may be thinking of congressional primaries used to determine a party's nominee. In this case, if there are several candidates receiving votes, a run-off might be held between the top two to determine the strongest candidate for the fall election. )
