There is no governor general of India. A governor general is the monarch's representative. India no longer recognizes the British monarch as their sovereign.
I think governors are appointed only for states

No. The people have absolutely no say in who is offered the position of Governor-General. The Governor-general is appointed by the Queen, on the advice and recommendation of the Prime Minister.

That is an example of separation of powers. Only the general assembly can make laws, but governor can veto them if he chooses.
