Albert B. Falls
The Teapot Dome scandal was during President Harding's Administration. Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall was caught leasing land to navy oil reserves at Teapot Dome and two other locations. While no one really knows for sure, Harding probably knew nothing about this.
The scandal involved oil executives who bribed a Presidential cabinet secretary.
The US government had set aside oil-rich public lands at Teapot Dome, Wyoming and Elk Hills, California, for use by the US Navy. In 1922 and 1923, there was a scandal in the administration of President Warren G. Harding, wherein his Secretary of the Interior, Albert B. Fall, was bribed to sell oil leases on the land to certain oil companies. Involved were leases to to Harry F. Sinclair of Mammoth Oil, a subsidiary of Sinclair Oil, and to Edward L. Doheny of Pan American Petroleum.
Fall was replaced, and later convicted. Harding died in office in August, 1923. Sinclair was jailed briefly for jury tampering, and fined for contempt. Doheny was charged, but acquitted.
Warren G. Hardingâ??s Secretary of the Interior, Albert Fall, was found guilty of accepting a bribe while in office. He released Navy oil reserves to companies without competitive bidding, because they had paid him to do so. He was the first cabinet member to be found guilty of corruption while in office.
